Week three – Downtown Chicago

We arrived downtown on Sunday April 27. While it was difficult to say goodbye to our new friends in the southern part of District 6450, we are enjoying our new friendships here.

I am staying with a wonderful Rotarian host, Andrea Leuhmann. We hit it off right away and I have thoroughly enjoyed her hospitality and friendship. The first evening she had a wonderful dinner with some good friends of hers, her collegue Sarah and Rotary Club of Chicago One’s President David Templin. I think we laughed the whole evening!!!!

On Monday, the 28th, Nasutsa Mabwa, the GSE area Coordinator, took us for a tour at City Hall in downtown. We were able to see the Mayor’s office, but unfortunately, not the Mayor. Afterward, we met up with David Baker, another GSE area Coordinator, together with Cassandra Houston, President of RC Southm for a trip to Cellular Stadium for a White Sox game. It was pouring and cold so the game did not start as planned. We all enjoyed Chicago style hotdogs with lots of onions and beer and waited, hoping the sky would clear. By 2 pm we knew weren’t able to enjoy the game so we decided to go the Museum of Science and Industry. I’m glad we were able to go. It was alot of fun and I personally relived some wonderful childhood memories

.

In the evening we were treated to the dress rehearsal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It was a modern rendition with voices do die for. The setting was a modern day bordello, which for me, detracted from the original. There are times when we do not need to be brought into the future using the classics. But, that’s my two cents worth. It was a great experience and we cannot thank the Rotary club enough for setting this opportunity up for us.
