Siamo al terzo giorno a Chicago e non finisco mai di apprezzare la grande ospitalita’ dei Rotariani che fanno di tutto per farci sentire a nostro agio. Sono ospitata da una famiglia fantastica; Geri e Don sono riusciti a farmi sentire quasi una di casa; non finiro’ mai di ringraziare Marie che ci accoglie tutti i giorni nella sua stupenda casa e che fa di tutto per semplificarci la vita; e’ davvero il nostro angelo protettore! Oggi abbiamo tenuto la nostra prima presentazione a Westmont; l’emozione era tanta, ma e’ andato tutto magnificamente, grazie soprattutto al calore delle persone che ci circondavano. Non vedo l’ora di poter visitare la casa e lo studio del grande Frank Lloyd Wrigth…si’, anche l’architettura e’ una mia grande passione!

 

We are on our third day in Chicago and I cannot help but appreciate the hospitality of the Rotarians here by making us feel at home and very welcome. My host family is fantastic: Geri and Don have made me feel as if I were one of them; I also cannot help but thank Marie Olmos. Every day she opens her beautiful house to us and does all she can to help us out; she is our guardian angel! Today we had our first presentation at the Westmont Rotary Club. We were very nervous but everything went smoothly.l The Rotarians gave us such a warm welcome. I can’t wait to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s house and study….yes, even architecture is one of my great passions!

Ieri abbiamo visitato la casa e lo studio di Frank Lloyd Wright e siamo andati a vedere le case da lui progettate presenti in Oak Park; è davvero sorprendente vedere quanto sia stato innovativo ai suoi tempi! Vedendo i suoi progetti ho provato la stessa emozione che ho avuto di fronte a capolavori come un quadro di Van Gogh o del Caravaggio. La giornata si è conclusa con una divertente cena in un ristorante messicano con parte dei nostri simpatici ospiti.

Oggi c’è stato il nostro primo vocational day, che ho trascorso in compagnia del Dott. George Olmos, una persona davvero squisita. Ho avuto la possibilità di visitare i reparti di neonatologia del Children’s Memorial Hospital e di un altro nuovissimo ospedale donato alla città di Chicago dai Rockfeller, scortata dalla cordiale Dott.ssa Isabelle Deplaen; poi ho potuto conoscere il Dott. Lapiere, che mi ha mostrato gli ambulatori dove svolge la sua attività di dermochirurgo. Anche se non ho avuto la possibilità di visitare una Clinica Dermatologica, dove potermi confrontare con i miei colleghi americani, grazie alle spiegazioni di George ho potuto conoscere più a fondo l’organizzazione della Sanità americana, completamente diversa dalla nostra.

 

Yesterday we visited the Frank Lloyd Wright house and study as well as visited the various houses that he designed around the Oak Park area, it is really surprising to see just how innovative he was at that time period! When looking at some of his projects, I was overcome with the same emotion that I get when admiring a Van Gogh or a Caravaggio. The day wrapped up with a fun dinner at an authentic Mexican restaurant as guests of our great hosts.

Today was our first vocational day that I spent with Dr. George Olmos, who is really a gem of a person. I had the opportunity to visit the neonatal department at the Children’s Memorial Hospital and another brand new hospital that was donated to the city of Chicago by the Rockfeller family. We were escorted by Dr. Isabelle Deplaen; we then met Dr. Lapiere who showed me the rooms where he visits his patients. He is a surgeon as well as dermatologist. Although I did not have the possiblity to visit the Dermatology Clinic, where I would’ve been able to compare notes with my American collegues, George was able to explain to me the the American Health System, which is completely different than ours in Italy.

18/4/2008:

Oggi abbiamo visitato la Chicago Simphony Orchestra e abbiamo fatto una passeggiata nella downtown per poter ammirare i più antichi grattacieli di Chicago, sotto l’esperta guida di Marie Olmos.

Nel pomeriggio siamo andati al Quartiere Generale del Rotary International, dove ci hanno mostrato la ricostruzione dell’ufficio, con mobili originali, del fondatore del Rotary, gli uffici dell’attuale Presidente, di quello che gli subentrerà a breve e di quello che entrerà in carica il prossimo anno; abbiamo potuto vedere anche le sale dove si svolgono le più importanti riunioni.

La serata si è conclusa molto piacevolmente in un pub irlandese in compagnia delle ragazze che fanno parte del GSE team che verrà in Italia. 

 

Today we visted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as well as taking a walking tour of the downtown region to admire the architecture of the older Chicago skyscrapers. Marie Olmos was an expert guide.

In the afternoon were headed off to the Rotary International Headquarters where we were shown the “office” of the founder of Rotary as it was back in at the beginning of the century, the actual offices of the President of Rotary International, of those who will begin their tenure shortly as well as being able to visit the conference rooms where they hold the more important meetings.

The evening concluded in a wonderful way at an Irish Pub in company with the outbound GSE team that will be arriving in Italy in June.

 

Siamo ormai da domenica pomeriggio nella zona di Kankakee e Burbonnais. E’ un’area agricola, molto tranquilla e rilassante. I miei ospiti hanno una splendida casa in una zona boschiva, vicino ad un ruscello; è un posto davvero meraviglioso! Con i miei nuovi ospiti mi sono trovata subito benissimo: Giovanni e Dorie sono delle persone molto gentili e premurose, che mi hanno fatto sentire subito come una di casa, quasi una figlia; non finirò mai di ringraziarli per tutto questo.

Il primo giorno siamo andati a visitare in mattinata la Good Shepard Manor, un istituto per disabili molto ben organizzato, i cui ospiti ci hanno accolto con una bellissima sorpresa; avevano organizzato un divertente spettacolo cantando canzoni italiane in nostro onore; per ringraziarli io e gli altri ragazzi del gruppo abbiamo improvvisato alcune canzoni italiane.

Nel pomeriggio siamo andati a visitare un allevamento di mucche, dove avviene la produzione di latte e formaggio ed ho concluso piacevolmente la serata al circo con i miei ospiti…avendo l’illusione di tornare indietro di 30 anni!

Ieri per il vocational day sono stata condotta, insieme a Silvia, a visitare il Provena St. Mary’s Hospital ed il Cancer Center.

 

 

Since Sunday afternoon, we’ve been in the area of Kankakee and Bourbonnais. It is an agricultural area but very tranquil and relaxing. My hosts have a splendid house in a wooded zone near a brook; it really is beautiful! I feel very lucky to have such great hosts  and we have quickly become friends: Giovanni and Dorie are two of the nicests people and made me feel at home right away, as if I were a daughter and I cannot thank them enough for all they’ve done these last few days.

The first day, in the morning, we went to see Good Shepard Manor, an institute for disabled that is very well organized. The guests gave us a warm welcome and a wonderful suprise; they organized a great show singing italian songs in our honor. To thank them my group and I improvised some more italian songs.

In the afternoon we visited dairy farm and I concluded my day with my host family….it’s as if I went back in time 30 years! Yesterday, for my vocational day, I, along with Silvia, went to visit Provena St. Mary’s Hospital and Cancer Center.

Mercoledì siamo andati a visitare un enorme vivaio, mentre giovedì mattino, grazie all’interessamento del mio ospite, il Dott. Salerno, ho avuto l’opportunità di frequentare lo studio di un noto dermatologo di Kankakee, il Dott. Pinski, con il quale ho potuto confrontarmi sulle mie conoscenze mediche e sulle terapie relative alle malattie dermatologiche; è stata davvero una mattinata interessante e fruttuosa, durata, purtroppo, troppo poco!

A fine mattinata siamo stati accolti dai Rotary Club di Kankakee, Bradley/Burbonnais e Manteno e nel pomeriggio abbiamo visitato l’High School di Lincoln-Way, guidati dai ragazzi dell’Interact club locale, con i quali abbiamo cenato.

On Wednesday we went to visit a huge nursery, while on Thursday morning, thanks to my host, Dr. Salerno, I had the opportunity to visit the offices of a very well known dermatologist in Kankakee, Dr. Pinski. I was able to compare medical notes as well as the relative therapies used for dermatological diseases. It was a very interesting and fruitful morning and perhaps a bit too short! Towards the end of the morning we were welcomed by the Rotary Club of Kanakee, Bradley/Burbonnais and Manteno. In the afternoon we visited Lincoln-Way High School, with a tour done by the local Interact Club, with whom we shared a wonderful meal.

 

Venerdì siamo stati a visitare uno stupendo teatro degli anni ’20 recentemente ristrutturato e siamo stati ospitati per il pranzo da un membro del Channahon- Minooka Rotary Club, che ci ha aperto la sua stupenda casa per accoglierci molto amichevolmente.

Abbiamo trascorso la sera con i nostri ospiti e i membri del Rotary Club di Kankakee divertendoci ad improvvisare balli locali, seguendo le istruzioni della nostra frizzante insegnante, una “giovinotta” di circa 70 anni ed esibendoci al pianoforte in canzoni italiane ed americane.

Sabato sveglia all’alba per raggiungere e salutare i partecipanti al Christmas in April; nel pomeriggio sono andata al centro di Chicago con i miei ospiti e abbiamo fatto un interessantissimo tour in bus nel centro, poi shopping…se non smetto di fare acquisti dovrò comprare un’altra valigia!

 

Friday we visited a beautiful theater built in the ’20s which was recently restored. We were then guests for lunch at the house of one of the members of the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club. She opened her beautiful home to us and we were warmly welcomed.

We spent the evening with our hosts and other members of the Kankakee Rotary Club with lessons in line dancing by a “young” woman of around 70 years.We finished the evening off by singing around the piano with Italian and American songs.

Saturday morning we woke up at dawn to greet the participants of their “Christmas in April” event. In the afternoon we headed off to downtown Chicago with my host family where we had an interesting bus tour, then shopping…if I don’t stop shopping I’ll have to buy another suitcase!

Ieri è stata davvero una tristissima giornata per me, sia perché ho lasciato la stupenda famiglia del Dott. Salerno, con cui sono stata molto bene e con cui è nata una bella amicizia che sicuramente durerà nel tempo, sia perché ho ricevuto la brutta notizia della morte di mia nonna che per me è stata come una seconda madre.

In serata ho conosciuto la mia nuova ospite, la professoressa Ana Gil-Garcia, una persona davvero squisita e gentile.

Oggi abbiamo avuto una giornata molto intensa: abbiamo visitato la City Hall, poi siamo andati allo stadio per assistere ad una partita dei Chicago White Sox, ma la pioggia incessante non ci ha permesso di vederne neanche una parte; allora abbiamo optato per un tour nel Museo della Scienza, che si è rivelato molto interessante. La serata si è conclusa magnificamente all’Harris Theater, dove abbiamo potuto assistere ad una brillante esecuzione del Don Giovanni.

Yesteday was a very sad day for me, not only because I had to say goodbye to Dr. Salerno’s fantastic family, with whom I really enjoyed and which I’m sure is the beginning of a lasting friendship, but also because I received some bad news from hom about the death of my grandmother, who for me was like a second mother. In the evening I met my new host family, Prof. Ana Gil-Garcia, a wonderfully smart and kind woman.

Today was a very intense day, we visited City Hall and then we went to the stadium to see a White Sox baseball game. Unfortunately, the rain did not allow us to see any of it so then we opted for a tour of the Museum of Science and Industry; which I found to be very interesting. The evening concluded with the magnificent opera of Don Giovanni at the Harris Theater. 

Mercoledì siamo stati accolti dai membri del Rotary Club number 1, che ci hanno ospitato per il pranzo. La serata si è conclusa al Devon’s seafood  and grille. Giovedì siamo andati a visitare il centro fieristico McCormick e l’Illinois Institute of Technology, dove abbiamo pranzato con parte dei membri del Chicago Near South Rotary Club. Poi per cena ci hanno portato a mangiare in un ristorante a Chinatown…non credo di aver mangiato peggio in vita mia in un ristorante cinese come quella sera, tra capelli che galleggiavano nella zuppa e ciglia mescolate ai gamberetti cotti al vapore…bleah! Ho concluso la serata con la mia ospite e gli altri ragazzi del GSE team in un locale, il Legends, dove suonavano blues. Giovedì ho trascorso il mio vocational day al Dermatology Department della UIC University, dove ho potuto confrontarmi con i colleghi americani. Poi in serata mi sono esibita ai fornelli per la mia ospite, cucinando per lei un risottino ai funghi e delle bruschette. E’ stata davvero una serata molto piacevole! Ana è stata una gentilissima ospite e mi dispiace di aver trascorso con lei solo pochi giorni, ma mi ha promesso che a dicembre mi verrà a trovare in Italia.

Abbiamo trascorso il week-end a Sheboygan, al Blue Arbor Resort, dove si è svolta la Conferenza annuale del Distretto che ci ospita.
